The Laurel Gathering was started in 2013 with a desire from the ladies in the Laurel community to get to know their neighbors better and to learn about the history of the area. It brought together families sharing food, stories and sense of community. The resulting success spurred us to make it an annual gathering. The first few annual gatherings were on the third Saturday of September. Weather has increasing become hotter over the last few years, even changing farmers’ harvest dates; the event switched to the third Saturday of August. The event has taken on the new name, Laurel Day.
Laurel Day has featured morning activities at the Laurel Community Church: Classic Car Cruise-In (with awards), local Farmers Market, free lunch with homemade pies, pie contest. Local historians share old stories. Children enjoy the group games. The dance school showcases their students. We’ve then gathered in the early evening at either the beautiful Ruby Vineyard, or Chehalem Mountain Pottery, to share a community potluck dinner, more stories and more music!
The organizations which plan and run Laurel Day are Laurel Community Church, and the area’s Ladies of Laurel Social Club.
